Suzu lab / the modal voice and the bow

A lattice of coupled cells, one per mode — a string, a bar, a bell, a glass — kept in tune whatever the coupling, and a bow that holds each mode at the energy the breath asks for.

The modes

each mode's energy now the bow's target, and dashed where the servo settles

One bar per cell of the lattice, placed at its frequency over the note's. A strike sets them ringing, each with its own decay — the high ones die first. Breathe, and the bow feeds every mode toward its target and no further: the servo takes energy out as surely as it puts it in, so the tone holds and never runs away. It is proportional, so each mode settles where the bow's push balances the mode's own decay — just under the target, closer the longer the decay (the dashed tick), and on it when nothing else takes energy.

Play

the engine loads with the sound

Click a key to hold the note; with the breath at zero it rings and fades, with breath the bow holds it. A coupling the engine's load gate refuses is reported above.
